Drive Sober or ________?

Summer is finally upon us!  BBQs, pool time, fireworks and menacing slogans from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety abound! Look, I am not pro “drunk driving” and I love a catchy slogan just as much as the next person, but “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” just does not sit right with me.
Here’s why:
You can be driving down the road as drunk as Cooter Brown, but unless the police have articulable suspicion aka a valid reason to stop you, you cannot legally be pulled over. You can thank the Constitution for that one.

Picture it:  you had a margarita with those delicious nachos at your favorite cantina and are driving home. You change the radio station because that one song the radio station plays over and over and over comes on AGAIN. While searching a few stations for something less annoying, you cross over a lane line. The police have the right to pull you over at that point, but you only had one margarita!  Does this mean you are automatically going to jail because it is Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over season?

Bottom line, it is illegal to operate a vehicle while under the influence to the extent that it is less safe for you to drive. The Roswell and all local police, along with state troopers will be extra diligent while on patrol this time of year, and any little mistake can get you pulled over.
Have fun!  Have a beer with your burgers or bourbon with your BBQ, but always have a safe ride to and from your festivities!  ‘Merica!!
